"Future Money"
Ron Galloway
President, American Mediaworks
Augusta, Georgia

In the last 10 years, technology has enabled rapid changes in the very nature of money; how it is stored and how it is perceived. PayPal users have billions of dollars in their accounts that may never pass through the traditional banking system, but that may be used to purchase goods and services through a Visa Debit Card. The new Wal-Mart Money Card is de facto the long awaited “Wal-Mart Bank.” i.e. it is a deposit account in all but name, with all the functions of a traditional bank account absent paper check writing. AOL founder Steve Case is launching the Revolution Card, a PIN-based card payment system that users may store up to $15,000 for use in their financial lives. Flyer miles, Microsoft Points, gift cards, and brokerage soft dollars are all alternative currencies that may be freely traded for goods. Huge markets are being created in the MMO game universe, with “World of Warcraft gold” and even “Star Wars Galaxies credits” having a definable value against the US dollar. The common thread running through the above products is their end-run around the traditional banking system. What is the impact of these existing products on the banking industry, and what other “virtual money” is on the horizon?

10:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. - Refreshment Break

10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Session Two
"Director Responsibilities and Liabilities"
David Kemp
President, Bankers Management, Inc.
College Park, Georgia

This session will focus on the “oversight” responsibilities of the board. We will also explore the proper relationship between management and the board. The potential liability of directors can be mitigated by proper exercise of their responsibilities. In short, it will cover how to be an effective director.

12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. Luncheon

1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. Session Three
"A Director's Guide to Risk Assessment"
Tom Ajax
Special Activities Case Manager, Federal Deposit Insurance Company
Atlanta, Georgia

Banking today seems to be all about taking risks and managing risks. Too many institutions, while enjoying the temporary profits of risk taking, have not coupled that with proper risk management, and have subsequently incurred significant losses and even failure. This session will explore the basis for risk management: the Risk Assessment. Areas included will be establishing the risk tolerance of the Board; identifying the risks facing the bank; determining the appropriate mitigating policies, procedures and actions; measuring the “net risk” after the application of the mitigating actions and insuring that it falls within the Board’s risk tolerance; implementing the mitigating factors; and instigating the critical Audit/Re-assessment Cycle that tests the effectiveness of the controls and maintains the dynamic nature of the risk assessment in order to fine tune risk management within the organization

6:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. - Reception & Banquet
(cash bar will be provided)
