The Florida Bankers Association Government Relations Department provides various
functions for the FBA. In addition to the work done lobbying for the benefit of
the banking industry and for a strong overall economy, the department also
hosts leadership lunches and dinners, publishes legislative bulletins and
position papers, and more.

During the course of the year, Government Affairs hosts
numerous dinners honoring federal or state government officials. These dinners
are typically attended by more than 200 bankers and are held in communities
throughout the state. Leadership Dinners allow bankers the opportunity to
communicate their concerns to government officials and reflect the strength and
unity of the Florida banking community.
On a slightly smaller scale, Government Affairs also hosts many Legislative
Luncheons each year. The lunches honor legislators throughout the state and are
attended by anywhere from one to 50 bankers from the legislator's community.
Like the dinners, the lunches also provide bankers a chance to relay their
concerns regarding industry issues and demonstrate the strength of the
association.
One of the bigger events hosted by Government Affairs is the annual Capitol Day.
Each year during legislative session, bankers from across the state travel to
Tallahassee to spend a day at the Capitol to discuss important issues and the
stance of the FBA with their legislators. Having so many bankers at the Capitol
sends the message that the FBA is a strong association with the backing of a
great membership.
Also hosted by the Government Relations Department is the FBA’s Annual
Washington, D.C. Trip. This trip continues to grow in attendance each year — more than 150 attended in 2007 — and sends a powerful message to all policy-makers
in the nation’s Capitol. Past speakers seen on the trip include Senator Mel
Martinez (R-Fl.) and Senator John McCain (R-Ar.).

Every once in a while, a legislative or regulatory issue will arise that
requires immediate action. Calls to action will require members to contact
their legislator or legislative leadership to support or oppose a bill or
regulatory action. An e-mail will be distributed to members and will detail the
FBA’s stance on the issue and how you can contact your legislative leadership.
Calls to action by the FBA typically receive overwhelming support and have been
demonstrated to be effective in most cases. To see any active FBA Call-to-Action Alerts, please click HERE.

The Florida Bankers Association Government Affairs team prepares position
papers to document the association’s stance on a particular issue. These
position papers are helpful to all FBA members and are typically given to
legislative members at the state and federal levels.

Florida BankPac is a statewide, bi-partisan, non-profit political action
committee organized by members of the Florida Bankers Association. Through
contributions to candidates whose views coincide with those favorable to
commercial banking and a free and competitive marketplace, BankPac supports the
campaigns of state and federal candidates.
The Florida Bankers Association has long enjoyed considerable success in the
legislative arena because of its ability and willingness to support candidates
who, in turn, support the banking industry’s legislative agenda. BankPac takes
its participatory role in the legislative process seriously and seeks out those
candidates who promote not only what is in the best interests of banks, but in
the best interest of a strong and viable economy.
For more information on the candidates supported by the FBA, or to make a
contribution, please contact Senior Vice President of Government Affairs,
Anthony DiMarco.
